City get off to a Flyer
2nd November 2012
City of Cambridge Swimming Club started the 2012/13 season in convincing manner with victory in the first round of the East Midlands Arena League.
The team were determined to get off to a good start and with just six weeks of hard training under their belts since the summer break were keen to make their mark at their home event.
A series of fine individual wins helped City of Cambridge take top spot, with the club claiming a total of 30 wins, nine second-place finishes and five third-place finishes. The club also performed well in the relay events, winning 12 out of a possible 16.
There were many eye-catching performances but particularly impressive wins came from Harry Robinson (under-15 boys’ 100m freestyle), Liam Doonan (open 100m butterfly), Dale Waterhouse (open 100m freestyle), Emily Biggs (under-13 girls’ 100m breaststroke), Molly Ollington (under-15 girls’ butterfly) and Megan Connor (open 100m freestyle).
Head coach James Freezer was delighted with his team’s efforts but knows there is a long way to go in this competition.
"I was pleased with the strength in depth in the relays but the team will have much tougher rounds ahead," he said. "We still need to improve in certain areas if we want to cement our place as one of the strongest teams in this league after such a successful run last season. There is nothing standing in the way of the result we want except honest hard work."
Result: 1 Cambridge 259pts, 2 Dereham 186, 3 Biggleswade 163, 4 Worksop Dolphins 159, 5 West Norfolk 141, 6 Norwich 134.

Cambridge Secure Top 20 Position in National Arena League B Final
3rd May 2012
Sunday 22 April 2012, Sheffield Ponds Forge, National Arena League B Final. City of Cambridge Swimming Club team and their enthusiastic supporters entered their highest profile gala in 10 years.
In a field that included 7 International Swimmers and 2 Olympians , the club finished in 10th place in the B final, giving them the overall position of 20th in the 2011/12 National League.
The final consisted of 50 events, 16 of which were team races. The 13 yrs and under age group swimmers performed outstandingly well with the boys finishing 4th in the 200m Freestyle relay and 5th in the 200m Individual Medley relay. The 13 and under girls also did well with a 5th place in their 200m Individual Medley. The 9 to 11year boys were placed 6th in their 200m Freestyle relay with the girls also coming 6th in their 200m Individual Medley. In the Open (16+) age group the boys finished 6th in the 300m Freestyle relay and the 200m Individual Medley relay, the girls finished in 7th in the Individual Medley relay.
Individual performances of note included Kate Little winning the 13 and under 100m Breaststroke, Harry Robinson’s 3rd place in the 100m 13 and under boys Freestyle, Alex Harrison competing in the Women’s Open (16+) category came 3rd in three events including the 100m Breaststroke, 100m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley. The rest of the team swam extraordinarily well with many achieving personal bests beyond expectations.
James Freezer, Head Coach said “The whole team did themselves proud, with an outstanding team spirit and performance throughout the event especially considering the outstanding opposition with many International swimmers being involved such as James Goddard, Ieuan Liyod who will represent GB in Olympics this summer”.
“It was fantastic to see the parents really get behind the team and this really had a positive effect on the swimmers and spurred them on”.
“The club has come a long way in such a short space of time”, Freezer continues, “ We gained promotion to the Division 1 of the Eastern Midlands league one month before I joined the club three years ago. The following year we finished mid-table, pushing up to 5th last year. From that to making it to the National finals is a great achievement. We must now look to make this a regular occurrence and improve on this result in future years ahead”.
The parents and supporters may still be struggling with their voices as despite representing the smallest club in the final, managed to win the award for Best Supporters with their relentless enthusiasm, blue wigs, flags and cheers. “The atmosphere was absolutely amazing”, said Sue Burton, parent and member of the club executive committee, “each club had come dressed up to support their team. We chanted and cheered until we had no voices left. The kids swam brilliantly”.
The Club Executive Committee would like to thank the event team especially Ann Auker and Rachel Kerridge for all their efforts.

Masters Nationals Success
3rd November 2009
The club had 18 individual swimmers plus one, swimming in the relays at the Nationals at Sheffield 2 weekends ago. Our medal haul was 4 golds, 5 silver and 5 Bronze this being made up of two bronze medals in the relays and the 12 Individual medals. This was a great result and demonstrates how the masters are progressing. Geoff Thwaites was the star with 4 golds in the 50m, 100m and 200m Breast and 400m FS. Son Ian had 3 silvers in the 50m, 100m Back and 100m FS and 1 bronze in the 50 FS. Luke Westwood had 2 Silver medals in the 200m Breast and 200m IM. Andrea Viola had a bronze in the 200m Breast and Alan Wallace a bronze in the 200m Back. We also had 2 bronze medals in the ladies 72+ 4 X 50m FS relay and the mixed 72+ 4 x 50m IM.
Most swimmers achieved at least one PB with Steve Buckley & Vince Pottier and Luke Westwood having PBs in all their swims. All in all a pretty good weekend for the club and a big thanks to Stu for the coaching and the great job he does sorting everybody and doing timed sprints, getting splits Etc, even when, on one ocassion, we had 3 swimmers in one pool and one in the other pool swimming at the same time! He looked more shattered than the swimmers by Sunday afternoon.

More Waterpolo Success
24th January 2008
Congratulations to Adam Oakman who has become the 3rd Cambridge Junior player in as many months to be scouted by the Great British Waterpolo team.
Adam has been invited to attend the GB training camp during Feburary half term. We all wish him luck for the tough week ahead of him!
It has been a good week for the Cambridge Juniors with 3 games and 3 very convincing victories. They won the Deben tournament on Saturday night beating Deben 13-0 and Ipswich 10-1. They then followed this up with an excellent performance against Magdelene college winning 16-0. They continue their unbeaten season against the University men's 'A' team next week. This will be a real challenge for the smaller and less experienced Junior team.
Good luck lads and well done Adam.
