City of Cambridge's Master swimmers had a successful weekend at the Midland District Masters Championships in Leamington Spa. The team of 8 swimmers, the largest at this competition for a considerable time, amassed a haul of 8 medals over the three days of competition.
Top individual performer was Steve Buckley who achieved two silver medal positions in the 100 freestyle and 100m Individual Medley and also took a bronze in the 50m butterfly, with a lifetime best performance of 29.86 seconds. Further bronze medals were added by Andrea Viola who took a brace of third places in the 50 and 100m breaststroke and Jutta Shickore, who posted a personal best of 35.11 seconds for the 50m butterfly.
The highlight from the team's perspective, however, was the bronze medal won by the mixed medley team in the 120+ age group, their first relay medal at this level. Strong swims from Buckley and Viola on the opening backstroke and breastroke legs put the team into medal contention, a position that was consolidated on the butterfly and freestyle sections by Shickore and Ruth Brown, who brought the team home for third place in 2:15.38, well clear of their nearest rivals. The feat was matched by the mens' medley team who also took bronze in the same age group.
